JOB SUMMARY: The Pharmacy Technician II assists the pharmacists in performing a variety of technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of drugs. Demonstrates proficiency in IV preparation, chemotherapy, auditing, ordering from the wholesaler, and using the automated dispensing machines. Duties are performed under the supervision of a pharmacist. Performs other related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists the pharmacists in performing a variety of technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of drugs
Demonstrates proficiency in IV preparation, chemotherapy, auditing, ordering from the wholesaler, and using the automated dispensing machines
Reconstituting intravenous medications and preparing sterile preparations (i.e. admixtures, minibags, adult & pediatric hyperalimentation, pediatric fluids, syringes, and irritations( according to departmental guidelines and utilizing aseptic technique under supervision of pharmacist
Performing calculations necessary to determine the amount of reconstituted drug needed to prepare admixture doses, as well as to calculate volumes for large volume admixture preparations
Utilizing departmental guideline sheets to determine the correct diluent and diluent volume to reconstitute sterile powders and to identify agents requiring special admixture precautions (i.e. do not shake, glass bottle only, etc.)
Auditing the automated dispensing machine discrepancy reports and responding to discrepancies
Assessing and adjusting inventory par levels as mandated by par vs. usage
Identifying storage and handling requirements for drugs requiring refrigeration, chemotherapy, light sensitive drugs, poisonous, flammable drugs
Performing calculations to determine dose volumes and conversions from apothecary to metric
Adhering to departmental procedure for IV hood cleaning and documenting of cleaning, pre-filter change, and documenting of freezer and refrigerator temperature
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School diploma or state high school equivalency certificate (GED)
Experience: Twelve months as Tech I or six months prior hospital experience preferred
Other: Must have current certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and obtain current NC Board of Pharmacy registration within 30 days of hire date.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Range of motion within functional limits. Constant walking, standing, near vision to normal range. Occasional work with arms overhead standing, work bent over standing/stooping, use of both hands together, far vision to normal range. Frequent deviation from neutral position of wrist (opening bottles). Frequent use of either hand, visual color discrimination, visual depth perception, functional vision and hearing. Occasional pushing 20#, pulling 15#, lifting 3# to 78″ height from 8″ from floor. Frequent manual/finger dexterity. Occasional use of stepstool depending upon height of teammate.
