Such events are usually all-consuming and easy to point to as reasons for feeling irritable or unhappy. “Under those conditions, people might use the stressor as a scapegoat,” she says. Even though the pandemic is a once-in-a-century kind of event, Neff says, there are past analogues, such as the 2007–2009 financial crisis. “During that time, people tended to blame the poor economy for the problems in their relationship,” she explains. A 2011 study found that such people reported feeling happier with their partner than couples who blamed each other for their day-to-day money problems.

To test if a similar phenomenon occurred in the time of COVID, Neff and her colleagues surveyed 191 participants for 14 days in April and May 2020. Members of the group, which included 81 couples and 29 individuals who had a partner but were participating without that person, answered questions about the sources of their stress and how satisfied they were with their relationship. The researchers then repeated the two-week survey last November and December and analyzed the responses. The team found that people generally blamed the pandemic for their daily stress more than they blamed themselves or their partner. When participants reported that stress was caused by the pandemic, they also reported higher satisfaction with their relationship.

Neff says she was surprised to observe that the benefits of pandemic scapegoating lasted for months. “We thought, as the situation lagged on, maybe people would forget about [the pandemic], or the stress would become too much,” she says. “But even in our follow-up wave, it was still beneficial.” Neff posits that because their follow-up occurred in November and December 2020, COVID-19 was still at the top of participants’ minds as they considered how to travel for and celebrate the holidays.

“This is a really novel application to understanding relationships in the time of COVID,” says Arizona State University researcher Ashley Randall, who studies how couples cope with stress and was not involved with the new study. But she adds that this work does not present a complete picture. “There are important limitations with respect to the study’s demographics,” she says. For instance, the participants were mostly white and well-educated, and only 16 percent reported a reduction in work hours and pay. People who lost their job or could not pay their bills might have experienced pandemic stress differently than those who remained financially secure. Concurrent events, such as high-profile incidents of police brutality and a rise in anti-Asian rhetoric and violence, could have also affected stressors for non-white couples, Randall notes.

Additionally, the analysis did not include any same-gender couples. Neff says her calculations suggested women might experience greater benefits than men, but she cautions that because more women than men participated in her investigation, these results might not be significant. In earlier studies of how the pandemic affected relationships, women reported greater emotional distress and a harder time maintaining a healthy work-life balance than men. Although Neff is not planning to probe the question of gender because of limitations of her sample set, she is now studying whether confinement and loss of alone time during COVID lockdowns actually brought couples closer together rather than driving them apart.

But even if pandemic scapegoating helped couples feel happier with their partner at the end of each day, is it healthy for people to blame all their relationship problems on external forces? “It’s easier for us to look outside of ourselves, whereas that ability to take and recognize ownership [is harder],” whether COVID-19 is the stressor or not, Randall says.

Pfizer says COVID vaccine highly effective against Delta variant

JERUSALEM, June 24 (Reuters) – The Pfizer-BioNTech >PFE.N< vaccine is highly effective against the Delta variant of COVID-19, a Pfizer official in Israel said on Thursday.

First identified in India, Delta is becoming the globally dominant variant of the coronavirus, according to the World Health Organization.

“The data we have today, accumulating from research we are conducting at the lab and including data from those places where the Indian variant, Delta, has replaced the British variant as the common variant, point to our vaccine being very effective, around 90%, in preventing the coronavirus disease, COVID-19,” Alon Rappaport, Pfizer’s medical director in Israel, told local broadcaster Army Radio.

A study by researchers from the University of Texas together with Pfizer and BioNtech and published this month by Nature journal found that antibodies elicited by the vaccine were still able to neutralize all tested variants, including Delta, albeit at reduced strength.

“We continue to synthesize viruses in our labs and with collaborators as we see new variants emerge so we can conduct testing to obtain the most information we can about our vaccine’s impact on neutralisation of emerging strains,” a Pfizer spokesperson said in an email to Reuters.

Other recent studies have also shown the vaccine is likely to provide high protection against the variant. read more

Israel has one of the world’s most advanced vaccination campaigns largely based on the Pfizer-BioNTech shot. Sharon Alroy-Preis, head of public health at Israel’s Health Ministry, said that Israel still lacks enough data to provide insight into vaccine effectiveness against the Delta variant.

“We are collecting the data now. We are only now seeing the first cases of the Delta variant in Israel – about 200 of those – so we will know more soon,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

An analysis by Public Health England (PHE), where the Delta variant is more widespread, found that both the Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca (AZN.L) vaccines provide more than 90% protection against hospitalization from the Delta variant. read more

In Israel, more than half the 9.3 million population has received both Pfizer shots and a steep drop in cases has prompted authorities to lift most coronavirus restrictions.

But confirmed cases have risen in the past few days and health authorities have urged parents to vaccinate their 12-to 15-year-olds, who were made eligible this month.

Alroy-Preis said around 65% of Israel’s population was protected against COVID-19, either by vaccination or by recovering from the disease, a figure she said was still far from providing “herd immunity.”

Australia official tests positive for COVID as new cases emerge

New South Wales reported at least 11 new cases overnight as state premier hints at possible new lockdown if rise continues.

The government in New South Wales (NSW), Australia’s most populous state, warned people on Thursday to brace for more COVID-19 cases, as a state minister tested positive, the health minister went into self-isolation and new curbs came into force designed to slow the spread of the Delta variant.

The state recorded at least 11 new cases overnight, bringing the total number in the current outbreak to 49.

Among them was NSW Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall, who confirmed his positive test result in a statement on Thursday.

At least 36 of the cases have been traced to one event in the beachside suburb of Bondi.

The news was greeted with concern and alarm by his colleagues at the state parliament.

At least three other state parliament members had also attended an event with Marshall on Monday night at a restaurant where someone later confirmed positive and linked to the Bondi cluster had also dined.

Earlier on Thursday, NSW state Health Minister Brad Hazzard told the Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC), that more cases should be expected.

Hazzard told the public service broadcaster he had been directed to self-isolate after he was deemed to be a possible close contact of a positive case.

‘On the brink of another lockdown’

On Wednesday, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian indicated that Sydney was on the brink of another lockdown as officials try to trace the missing links in the city’s newly diagnosed cases.

As part of the state’s contact-tracing effort, the state government stepped up its mass testing with 48,402 tested on Wednesday, up from 44,640 people the day before.

Berejiklian told parliament that her government “will not hesitate to go further and harder if we have to” with restrictions.

Sydney, the state capital and home to a fifth of Australia’s 25 million population, has been effectively isolated from the rest of the country after some states closed their borders while others tightened entry rules.

On Wednesday, Queensland shut its land border with NSW due to the emergence of new cases.

Also on Wednesday, the NSW state government imposed new movement restrictions, banning travel outside the metropolitan Sydney area while requiring residents to continue using face masks at public areas until next week.

Visitors to private homes have also been limited to five, while capacity at sporting events have halved.

NSW officials have warned that the transmission of the Delta variant, first detected in India, could be faster and take place even after minimal contact with an infected person.

Snap lockdowns, tough social distancing rules and swift contact tracing have so far helped Australia successfully suppress past outbreaks.

The country has been among the world’s most successful in containing the pandemic, allowing it to reopen its border to New Zealand.

But the new cases are testing the travel bubble between the neighbours.

As of Thursday, Australia had recorded more than 30,300 cases and 910 deaths since the pandemic began in 2020.

So far, there have been 6.72 million vaccine doses administered across Australia with 1.09 million people – 4.3 percent of the country’s total population – fully vaccinated, according to Our World Data.
