Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene on Saturday accused Democrats and Dr. Anthony Fauci of pushing for COVID-19 vaccines to be mandated, and for failing to address obesity within the pandemic.
Speaking on a large Twitter thread, Greene stated that lockdown orders and gym closures to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus are leading to “more weight gain,” while criticizing Democrats for encouraging individuals to be inoculated.
“According to the CDC, the highest risk factor for covid hospitalization, ventilation, and death is OBESITY. As a matter of FACT, 78% of those who were ventilated or died from covid were obese,” Greene wrote on Twitter.
“With over 42% of our population being obese, why isn’t the biggest effort to save people’s lives seriously tackling the critical health risk of obesity?” she added.
Greene then blamed Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, for endorsing masks, social distancing, and lockdowns that have “forced people indoors and alone.”
“This closed gyms, sports, activity outlets, schools, and increased depression and suicide. AND added more weight gain,” she added.
“With all of this scientific data known about obesity and covid, Dr. Fauci and the Democrats are pushing the covid vaccines to be mandated for our survival, instead of addressing obesity to help people,” she said.
The Georgia Republican also stated that she introduced a bill called the “Fire Fauci Act,” and accused the infectious disease expert of “helping big Pharma and destroying freedom.”
Within her Twitter thread, Greene also posted videos of herself exercising, and encouraged her followers to tag her in videos of themselves doing pull-ups.
Greene, an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump who was elected last November, was removed from all of her House committee assignments in February following a bipartisan vote prompted by a series of controversial past remarks, including past support of pro-Trump conspiracy theories like QAnon and Pizzagate.
The Georgia Republican is also an avid exerciser and former CrossFit affiliate gym owner who has continued to tout the brand throughout her time in politics. However, last month, a spokesperson for CrossFit denounced Greene’s “loathsome and dangerous lies.”
“CrossFit supports respectful fact-based political dialogue to address our common challenges, and we strongly oppose the loathsome and dangerous lies attributed to Ms. Greene,” CrossFit spokesperson Andrew Weinstein told BuzzFeed.
More recently, Greene has pushed back against the development of vaccine passports, and introduced a bill called the “We Will Not Comply Act” that would allow people to file a lawsuit if a business refused them service because they weren’t vaccinated against COVID-19.
“It’s called Corporate Communism. Massive corporations are doing the dirty work of [President Joe] Biden and the Democrats. People should have the right to choose whether to wear a mask or get a vaccine,” Greene previously told Newsweek. “They shouldn’t have to deal with judgement, hate or denial of public accommodations due to personal health decisions.”
On Saturday, Greene reiterated in a tweet that she’s not “against the vaccine” by choice, but said she will fight against “any and all” forced mandates.
Newsweek contacted Greene for an additional comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.
