Task Summary Position is accountable for helping the Pharmacist in the provision of pharmaceutical care by carrying out technical and clerical tasks associated with the operation of the Pharmacy.
Task Description
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Need to be a minimum of 18 years of age, and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Present Pharmacy Tech certification or Pharmacist Intern License needed
- Sterile Products Accreditation through accredited program is needed if incumbent substances sterile items
Experience/ Knowledge/ Abilities:
- One (1) year hospital pharmacy experience is preferred.
- Needs to understand medical terms.

Principal Accountabilities
- Selects prescribed medications according to dosage and strength showed on patient medication file or cart-fill list.
- Gets merchandise and locations into stock.
- Keeps track of assigned areas for out-of-stock or obsolete inventory.
- Delivers medications to the client care locations.
- Inspects and preserves emergency medication trays.
- Packages and labels unit dosage oral liquids/tablets, and maintains pre-pack records.
- Collects and loads drugs into an automated drug dispensing system (PYXIS). Maintains inventory for non-automated client care locations.
- Responds to ask for medications from nursing personnel and other departments.
- Follows processes to make sure all medications are certified to technology safety checks.
- Prepares sterilized products in a precise and aseptic manner when suitable.
- Attends to clients as an intermediary and collects a medication history if suitable.
- Correctly manage pharmaceutical waste
- Credits patients for returned medications using the computer system, and returns the medication to stock.
- If a registered intern: Under direct guidance of a pharmacist, contacts and consults doctors concerning the appropriate drug, dose, dosing period, drug allergic reaction and drug-drug interactions.
- Ensures safe care to patients, adhering to policies, procedures, and requirements, within financial specs, consisting of time management, supply management, performance, and accuracy of practice.
- Promotes specific expert growth and development by conference requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; acts as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less skilled personnel.
